European Council head sees Brexit reversal possible

Mubasher: European Council president Donald Tusk still believes that the UK’s departure from the European Union (EU) could be still reversed, after the Brexit was postponed until 31 October, according to The Independent.

“During the European Council one of the leaders warned us not to be dreamers, and that we shouldn’t think that Brexit could be reversed, [but] at this rather difficult moment in our history, we need the dreamers and dreams,” Tusk was quoted by the UK online newspaper.

“At least, I will not stop dreaming about a better and united Europe,” Tusk said, warning against “[giving] into fatalism.”

Last Wednesday, EU leaders agreed to give the UK a long Brexit extension until 31 October, after Prime Minister Theresa May requested a longer deadline to get her deal passed through the parliament.

Tusk pushed for the prolonging of the deadline, partially because that would give London the time to “rethink Brexit.”

On the other hand, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker voiced a less optimistic tone.

“If the UK has not ratified the withdrawal agreement by [31 October] then there will be a hard Brexit, which we would like to avoid [and] of course the UK can request to revoke Article 50 – that is something that’s been made very clear,” Juncker was quoted by the Independent.
