Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s government has purchased 3.2 million tonnes of wheat from local farmers since the beginning of this harvest season, assistant to the country’s minister of supply said.

The world’s largest wheat importer will pay farmers between EGP 655 and EGP 685 per ardeb (150 kilograms) of wheat based on quality, Ahmed Kamal told Mubasher on Sunday.

The supply ministry aims to buy 3.6 million tonnes of local wheat during the season, which began in April, he added.

It is noteworthy that Egypt consumes between 15-16 tonnes of local and imported wheat per year, according to official data.
