Iran captures crude carrier near Hormuz Strait–state media

Mubasher: Iran captured a foreign-flagged oil carrier near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the state-owned media outlets announced.

A Panamanian-registered ship, on which there were 12 crew members, aimed to smuggle one million litres of oil, Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps said.

The incident took place on Sunday, and it was reported by Iran’s Press TV and other media agencies on Thursday.

Press TV released video footage in which Iranian navy boats surrounding the vessel, under the name of Riah.

US Central Command based in Bahrain, where the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet is located, stated that it was aware of the reported incident, while Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that it was trying to get more information about the ship

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif described the incident as an ordinary maritime policing matter, noting that Iran does “this kind of thing every day.”

On a side note, Iran would propose a deal to the US, under which it would offer advanced inspections of its nuclear facilities in exchange for permanent end to economic sanctions, Zarif said.
