Microsoft’s quarterly profit climbs 49%

Mubasher: Microsoft said that its net income climbed by 49% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of its 2019 fiscal year, while revenue rose by 12%, according to the US company’s statement.

Microsoft’s bottom line came in at $13.2 billion during the three-month period ended last June, compared to $8.87 billion in the corresponding period of the prior year. Earnings per share (EPS) were $1.71, doubling year-on-year from $1.14.

The tech giant’s revenues totalled $33.71 billion in the period between April and June, as compared to $30.08 billion in the same period last year. This marked the ninth straight quarter of double-digit yearly revenue growth.

Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud division, including Azure public cloud, Windows Server and SQL Server, generated $11.39 billion in the fourth quarter, growing 19% from $9.60 billion a year ago.

Revenue from Azure jumped by 64% during the quarter, which was the lowest growth rate since at least four years.

Commercial Cloud business, which includes commercial LinkedIn products, Azure and Office 365 subscriptions, produced $11 billion in revenue, rising 39% year-on-year, while this drove Microsoft’s strongest commercial quarter.

Looking ahead, Microsoft expected to record a range of $31.7 billion and $32.4 billion in revenue across its three business divisions in the first quarter, the company’s CFO Amy Hood said on a conference call.

Cost of goods for the first quarter would come in at a range of $10.55 billion and $10.75 billion.
