Ford to recall 108,000 cars over seat belt issue

Mubasher: Ford would recall more than 108,000 midsize cars in North America, citing a problem with seat belt anchor pretensioners that raises the risk of injury in crashes.

“In affected vehicles, increased temperatures generated during deployment of the driver or front-passenger seat belt anchor pretensioner could degrade the tensile strength of the cable below the level needed to restrain an occupant,” the US auto giant said in a statement.

“Seat belt assemblies that do not adequately restrain the occupant in a crash can increase the risk of injury,” the statement added, noting that one reported injury from the issue was reported.

The recall covers 103,374 vehicles in the US, 4,002 vehicles in Canada and 1,023 vehicles in Mexico, including 2015 Fusions and Lincoln MKZ vehicles.

Dealers would apply a protective coating to cables, and owners would be notified as from 9 September.
