The project is set to generate up to 250 megawatts

UAE – Mubasher: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded an AED 1.437 billion contract to a consortium comprising Strabag Dubai LLC, Strabag AG, Andritz Hydro, and Ozkar for the construction of the pumped-storage hydroelectric power station at Hatta.

Électricité de France (EDF), a Paris-based electric utility company, has been appointed the consultant for the project, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.

The project, the first of its kind in the GCC, is set to generate up to 250 megawatts and is expected to last for nearly 80 years.

Moreover, the strategic project is scheduled to start operation by February 2024.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA, said: "This AED 1.437 billion pumped-storage hydroelectric power station project is part of our efforts, initiatives, and plans to achieve the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid.”

“DEWA’s strategy supports the UAE Centennial 2071, the UAE Vision 2021, and the Dubai Plan 2021 to ensure a sustainable, happy future and support the UAE’s aim to become first in everything," he added.

This project will help to diversify the sources of energy and develop Hatta economically, socially, and environmentally.

Additionally, it will support the strategy of the Dubai Clean Energy 2050 to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2050.
