US to grant another 90-day reprieve to Huawei

Mubasher: The US administration would hand Huawei a new 90-day window in which the Chinese company could buy components from US suppliers, even as around 50 of its units are included in an economic blacklist, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said on Monday.

The extension through 18 November renews an agreement for continuing Huawei’s ability to keep existing telecommunications networks and offer software updates to its devices, Reuters reported.

The additional reprieve aims “to afford consumers across America the necessary time to transition away from Huawei equipment, given the persistent national security and foreign policy threat,” the department said in a statement.

The Commerce Department permitted the Chinese tech giant to buy some US-made goods in a move to limit disruptions for its customers.

“As we continue to urge consumers to transition away from Huawei’s products, we recognise that more time is necessary to prevent any disruption,” Ross was quoted by the news agency.

Exporters, re-exporters or transferors are currently required to have a certification statement from any of Huawei’s entities before using the temporary general license.

However, the department would also add 46 Huawei affiliates to the Entity List, which comprises firms effectively blocked from conducting business with US customers.

This take the total number to more than 100 Huawei entities that are covered by the restrictions.
