Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian government has started implementing a plan for water conservation at a value of EGP 900 million, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported, citing the country’s prime minister Mostafa Madbouly as saying. 

The plan includes shifting to modern irrigation systems, treating wastewater, and expanding in setting up water desalination plants, Madbouly added in his speech to the parliament on Wednesday.

In less than three years, the government has implemented projects worth EGP 110 billion, he noted.

Several water desalination projects are expected to be complete within two years at a cost of EGP 160 billion to meet the growing demand for water with the rising population, the prime minister revealed.

In addition, the Ministry of Housing has already started in establishing and raising the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants set to be complete by the end of fiscal year 2019/2020.

Currently, seawater desalination plants produce about 800,000 cubic metres per day, compared to 80,000 cubic metres per day three years earlier.
