Volvo Cars to cut carbon footprint by 40% per car

Mubasher: Volvo Cars, owned by China’s Geely Holding, revealed its ambitious plan to cut its carbon footprint by 40% per car between 2018 and 2025, according to the auto manufacturer’s press release.

The Swedish carmaker said it will implement measures in its push to scale back carbon dioxide footprint on the near term.

The string of measures comprises two previously announced goals of generating 50% of its global sales from fully electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025 and reaching a 25% share of recycled plastics in new vehicles by the time.

Within the framework of its ambition to become a climate-neutral company by 2040, Volvo’s plan will go further beyond reducing the tailpipe carbon emissions.

By 2025, Volvo will reduce carbon emissions also at its manufacturing and logistics and supply chain by 25%, while it will recycle and reuse materials.

Volvo was the first automaker to commit to a comprehensive electrification and rolling out vehicles fuelled only by an internal combustion engine.

While “we will address what we control […]we will address what we can influence, by calling on our suppliers and the energy sector to join us in aiming for a climate-neutral future,” Volvo’s CEO Håkan Samuelsson said.
