China’s refinery throughputs hit fresh peak in September

Mubasher: China’s crude oil refinery runs hit a record peak, climbing by 9.4% year-on-year in September, led by increases from new refiners, and other independent plants returning from maintenance.

Refinery inputs came in at 56.49 million tonnes, or around 13.75 million barrels per day (bpd), figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Friday.

Compared with August, refinery inputs rose by 8% from 12.72 million bpd, higher than an earlier record of 13.07 million bpd reached last June.

Over the first three quarters of this year, throughputs advanced 6.2% year-on-year to 480.38 million tonnes, or 12.85 million bpd.

However, lower margins are set to weigh on gains of oil product output in the fourth quarter, as refiners face surging shipping costs and higher premiums for crude imports in mid-September.

China’s crude oil output rose by 2.9% on year to 15.64 million tonnes, or 3.81 million bpd, while it went up by 1.2% year-on-year to 143.13 million tonnes, or 3.83 million bpd in the period between January and September.

By 10:33 am GMT, US Nymex crude futures jumped by 0.74% to $54.33 per barrel (pb), while international benchmark Brent futures rose by 0.28% to $60.08 pb.
