Germany, France, UK to discuss Iran’s deal in Paris

Mubasher: The foreign ministers of Germany, France and the UK are set to discuss the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran in a meeting in Paris, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Monday.

The discussions around the situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), will be held in the context of Iran’s fourth stage of limiting its nuclear obligations.

“In this respect, I will hold a meeting today, in the second half of the day, with my French counterpart and my UK counterpart in Paris to discuss what comes next,” Maas said.

The German minister asserted the willingness to salvage the nuclear pact, while highlighting the need to get Iran to return to its commitments and adhere to them.

“Otherwise, we will limit all the mechanisms envisioned in the agreement,” Maas said.

Maas’ remarks came after his arrival at the Foreign Affairs Council, where discussions on Iran will be held.

Last week, Iran triggered the fourth phase of reducing its obligations under the landmark 2015 nuclear pact.

The Iranian Atomic Energy Organization said that Tehran plans to enrich uranium to 4.5% at the Fordow nuclear facility.

The European Union (EU) is “highly concerned” over Iran’s uranium enrichment, Maas said.

In May last year, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal, re-instating sanctions on Iran’s banks and hydrocarbon industry.

The move was criticised by the remaining signatories to the deal, including the UK, France and Germany, who have been scrambling to save the deal, pledging to find a way to scrap the re-imposed US sanctions.
