Ghana’s C.Bank weighs issuing digital currency

Mubasher: Ghana could soon issue a digital currency to boost the expansion of electronic payment systems, including mobile money.

The Bank of Bank is also in discussion with key stakeholders to explore a pilot project, and could issue in “the near future” central bank electronic currency, “e-cedi,” the central bank’s governor Ernest Addison said in a keynote address at the 23rd Annual Banking Conference.

“The digital age provides enormous potential for the financial sector to re-orientate itself to satisfy the new consumer and business demands for financial services,” Addison said.

The governor said mobile money transaction volumes grew to 1.4 billion Ghanaian new cedi (GHS) ($252.2 million).
