Nigeria may contribute 35% of Africa's transmission pipeline – GlobalData

Mubasher: The data analytics and consulting company, GlobalData, said that Nigeria is forecast to contribute about 35% of Africa’s total planned and announced oil and gas new-build trunk/transmission pipeline length additions over the period from 2019 to 2023.

The African country may provide additions totalling 6,601.5 kilometres of new-build pipeline by 2023, mostly constituting natural gas at 6,460 km while crude oil pipelines will stretch over 142 km, GlobalData revealed in a recent report.

In this regard, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Varun Ette, said, “In Nigeria, 11 new-build pipelines are expected to start by 2023. Of these, eight are planned projects and the remaining three are from early-stage announced projects. Trans Saharan Gas is the longest upcoming pipeline in the country with a length of 4,400 km. This announced natural gas pipeline is expected to start operations in 2021.”

“Followed by Niger, Algeria is expected to add 2,007.3 km of infrastructure from five planned and two early-stage announced pipelines by 2023. Haoud El Hamra–Bejaia II is the major upcoming pipeline in the country with a length of 667.7 km. The crude oil pipeline is expected to start operations in 2022,” Ette stated.

It is worth mentioning that Niger has the second-highest new-build pipeline additions in Africa with two new-build pipelines, namely the crude oil pipeline, Niger–Benin pipeline with a length of 1,980 km and the petroleum products pipeline, Zinder–Torodi pipeline, with 1,070 km. The additions are expected to start operations by 2023.
