Jordan attracts over $5bn clean energy investments
Gov't added 1,500MW clean energy to national electricity grid

Mubasher: Jordan has expanded renewable energy share in its energy mix, attracting more than $5 billion in investments, the kingdoms’ ambassador to the UAE, Jumaa Al-Abadi, stated on Saturday, according to the Jordan News Agency (Petra).

Since 2014, Jordan developed a legislative and regulatory environment that allowed for the attracting of investments in clean energy and energy efficiency, Al-Abadi added during the tenth session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Such environment enabled the government to develop solar and wind energy projects that added about 1,500 megawatts to Jordan’s national electricity grid, which account for 20% of total electricity generated, he noted.

Moreover, Al-Abadi expected that clean energy contribution of the Jordanian energy mix will rise to 20% of the total power output by 2021, compared with only 1% in 2014.

IRENA’s tenth session takes place ahead of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and the World Future Energy Summit which are held from 13 to 16 January 2020 and features a number of events hosted by IRENA.
