US, China agree to resume comprehensive dialogue

Mubasher: The US and China have agreed to restart semi-annual talks aimed at resolving economic and trade disputes between the two countries, Reuters reported.

The US-China Comprehensive Economic Dialogue is expected to be announced on 15 January as part of the initial trade agreement between the US and China, according to official sources.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He are likely to lead the dialogue sessions.

The China-US Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) began in 2006, was renamed in 2009 to the Strategic and Economic Dialogue, and then the Comprehensive Economic Dialogue in July 2017.

Recent trade tensions, or the trade war, halted the twice a year meeting and led to talks between the two countries to focus on tariffs.
