Drogba backs Côte d’Ivoire by raising $15bn commitments for tourism
Côte d’Ivoire registered an 8% GDP growth rate in 2019

Mubasher: Didier Drogba, the international football star, has helped in collecting a total of $15 billion memoranda of understanding (MoUs), in a move to boost developments of the tourism sector in his birthplace, Côte d’Ivoire.

The West African country registered an 8% GDP growth rate in 2019. As a destination, Côte d’Ivoire comes in third place in Sub-Saharan Africa with 2 million international visitors, behind South Africa and Zimbabwe, ahead of Uganda, Botswana, Kenya or Mauritius, UNWTO 2018 data shows.

Drogba, the former Chelsea striker who is currently a UN world tourism ambassador, was part of a successful global campaign promoting the success and attractiveness of Côte d’Ivoire’s tourist economy. The collected commitments shall be earmarked for enhancing tourism in the country through hotels, to resorts and coastline development
