POS operations in KSA reach SAR 28.5bn in January - SAMA
Riyadh came in first place in terms of spending with SAR 9.35 billion

Riyadh - Mubasher: The value of points of sales (POS) transactions in Saudi Arabia increased by 33.4% in January 2020 to SAR 28.53 billion, compared to SAR 21.38 billion in the same month last year, according to data by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA).

The number of POS transactions soared by 75% year-on-year (YoY) last January to 186.14 million transactions from 106.36 million in January 2019.

In addition, the number of devices used hiked to 452,320 devices in January, compared to around 358,600 in the corresponding period a year earlier.

Monthly performance

On a monthly basis, the value of POS transactions went up by 2.15% in January, compared to its level in December 2019 at SAR 27.93 billion.

Moreover, the number of POS transactions went up by 2.87% month-on-month (MoM), after it recorded 180.96 million last December, while the number of used terminals grew by 3.12% in January, compared to 438,600 devices in December.

Cities and sectors

The food and beverage sector dominated the highest value in POS transactions with SAR 3.58 billion, followed by restaurants and cafes with SAR 3.34 billion.

As for cities across the kingdom, Riyadh came in first place in terms of spending with SAR 9.35 billion, accounting for 32.77% of the total POS sales.
