Biofuel project in Al Ahmadi Refinery finalised - KNPC
KNPC's CEO, Waleed Al Bader

Mubasher: Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) announced the completion of the biofuel project in Mina Al Ahmadi Refinery after the successful launch of the last two production units, the company’s CEO, Waleed Al Bader, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Tuesday.

The final units are coal and naphtha hydrotreating units with a production capacity of 37,000 and 8,400 barrels a day, respectively.

Operations are executed at an accelerated pace to complete other units at the Mina Abdullah Refinery.

Al Bader described the new achievement as a “milestone” in the history of the company and the Kuwaiti oil sector in general.

The project allows KNPC to meet the domestic and international demand for clean fuels, which corresponds to strict environmental requirements. Kuwait's global position in the oil refining industry will be also strengthened.

Furthermore, it will develop KNPC’s refining capacity and contribute to operational excellence, reliability, and safety performance in the Mina Al Ahmadi and Mina Abdulla refineries, while promoting energy efficiency.

Once completed, Mina Al Ahmadi Refinery, which contains 31 units, would have a production capacity of 346,000 barrels a day. This totals around half of the biofuel project’s capacity upon completion of works at Mina Abdullah Refinery, 800,000 barrels a day, KNPC’s deputy CEO, Abdullah Al Ajmi, said.

The biofuel project has been constructed at a cost of KWD 4.6 billion ($14.7 billion).
