Biden to be sworn in as US President on Wednesday

Mubasher: Democrat Joe Biden will be inaugurated as the 46th President of the US on Wednesday, assuming charge of a country battered by a raging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and scarred by deep political divisions, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Biden is expected to call for unity and discuss his plans for fighting the pandemic and boosting the economy in his inaugural address.

On Tuesday, the number of COVID-19 cases reached 24 million, the highest of any country, with 400,000 fatalities. Millions of Americans became unemployed due to pandemic-related shutdowns and restrictions.

Biden has pledged more funding to purchase rapid tests, expand lab capacity, and increase vaccination rates.

He has promised a $1.9 trillion relief package to improve jobless benefits and provide direct cash payments to households in a bid to help Americans weather the repercussions of the pandemic.

The plan will need approval from a deeply-divided Congress, where Democrats will hold slight lead in both the House and Senate.

Biden announced an ambitious agenda for his first 100 days, including administering 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccinations.

He also plans to take several executive orders on his first day in the White House, including ending Trump’s ban on travel from 13 Muslim-majority and African nations, rejoining the Paris climate accord, and mandating the wearing of face masks on federal property.
