UAE - Mubasher: Majid Al Futtaim has joined IBM Food Trust, a modular solution for the food industry built on blockchain, to offer food traceability across Carrefour stores.
Majid Al Futtaim will use the IBM Food Trust, based on IBM Cloud, in two initial product categories, comprising Carrefour’s fresh chicken brand and microgreens harvested from select in-store hydroponic farms, according to a press release on Monday.
Through a blockchain network, IBM Food Trust includes critical information, including product origin, transportation, ingredients, and production process.
Hence, this initiative will enable its participants across the food supply chain to utilise their smartphones to scan a QR code and have access to the food supply chain data.
Majid Al Futtaim will give Carrefour customers access to traceability details across various products in the UAE, before introducing it to other Carrefour markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
The CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Retail, Hani Weiss, said: "Trust in the food supply is becoming increasingly important worldwide, a trend accelerated by changing consumer demands and the subsequent health and wellbeing concerns arising from the COVID-19 pandemic."
