Mohammed bin Salman launches Saudi, regional green initiatives

Riyadh – Mubasher: The Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the ‘Saudi Green Initiative’ and the ‘Middle East Green Initiative’ with the aim to provide a roadmap for the kingdom and the region to combat climate change, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Saturday.

He said that desertification is one of the significant climate challenges facing the kingdom and the region as about $13 billion is being lost due to dust storms every year.

Air pollution from greenhouse gases is estimated to have shortened average Saudi life expectancy by one and a half years.

Through the Saudi Green Initiative, the kingdom aims to raise vegetation cover, cut carbon emissions, combat pollution and land degradation, and preserve marine life.

This will include the planting of 10 billion trees in the kingdom in the upcoming decades, the equivalent to rehabilitating about 40 million hectares of degraded lands, a 12-fold rise from the current tree covers.

This represents Saudi Arabia’s contribution of more than 4% in achieving the objectives of the global initiative to reduce the degradation of lands and fungal habitats.

Saudi Arabia will also work to cut carbon emissions by over 4% of global contributions as part of its plan to generate 50% of its energy from renewables by 2030.

The kingdom will also work on the Middle East Green Initiative with GCC countries and Middle Eastern countries to plant an additional 40 billion trees across the region, which will restore an area equivalent to 200 million hectares of degraded land, representing 5% of the global target of planting 1 trillion trees and cutting 2.5% of global carbon emissions.

Further details of the Saudi Green Initiative will be unveiled in the coming months and a global forum with international partners for the Middle East Green Initiative will be launched in the second quarter (Q2) of 2022.
