Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt is working to achieve self-sufficiency of strategic food commodities, led by wheat, according to the Egyptian Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Ali El-Meselhy.

The country’s wheat production stands at 8-9 million tonnes per year, with consumption at 18 million tonnes, so the government and the private sector are bridging the 9-10 million-tonne gap, the minister said during the Ministry of International Cooperation’s multi-stakeholder platform (MSP) on the supply sector titled “Sustainable Value Chains: Towards Food Security.”

El-Meselhy further noted that the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade is working on a four-pillar strategy to enhance the value added chain in the wheat sector, by developing the process of production, transportation, logistics, and consumption, as well as cooperating with the Ministry of Agriculture to increase productivity.

The ministry is working to build new silos and increase the current capacity to improve the quality of wheat, develop silos infrastructure management system, and establish strategic warehouses, the minister added, noting that the ministry successfully achieved higher rates of food security.

The ministers of international cooperation and supply and internal trade inaugurated in March the Regional Center for Technology for Storage and Deliberation of Grains, which was implemented by the Egyptian Holding Company for Silos and Storage (EHCSS), as part of the $300 million cooperation framework with the UAE to develop 25 silos.

In 2020, the Ministry of International Cooperation secured $9.8 billion in development financing, of which $6.7 billion were allocated for the support of state projects and $3.2 billion for the private sector.
