Egypt hosts 13 subsea cables with five more under construction
Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat

Cairo – Mubasher: The Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, said that the country hosts 13 subsea cables with five more under installation.

During his talk at the “Investment Opportunities in IT and Infrastructure in Egypt” session during Expo 2020, Talaat noted that the cables are responsible for more than 90% of the data traffic in Asia and Europe, according to a statement on Monday.

The state-run Telecom Egypt is planning to launch Hybrid African Ring Path (HARP), a new subsea system outlining Africa, in a bid to provide coastal and landlocked African countries with high-speed affordable Internet, the minister pointed out.

He revealed a plan to build a wide fibre optic connectivity coverage to serve the international data traffic crossing the Egyptian land securely through a 4,000-square kilometre network.

In 2021, the number of international subsea cable landing stations rose to 10 from six, he added.

He noted that the communications and information technology sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors, with a growth rate of nearly 16% and a contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) of 4.5%.
