UAE – Mubasher: The UAE has inaugurated the region’s first waste-to-energy plant in Sharjah on 24 May, marking a new era of clean energy output and climate neutrality after producing the first kilowatt (KW) of power from waste.

The plant will turn around 300,000 tonnes of waste into energy on an annual basis, generating 30 megawatts (MW) of low-carbon electricity, which is enough to run nearly 28,000 homes in the UAE, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported on Wednesday.

In addition, the project will help in cutting the emission of up to 450,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, reinforcing the country's efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The AED 4 billion scheme comes in line with the UAE's economic approach to turn waste into efficient resources and develop several waste-to-energy facilities.

Meanwhile, the country intends to establish more waste-to-energy plants, like Warsan-based Dubai Waste Treatment Centre.
