Police investigate ex-French President over Gaddafi funding

Mubasher: French police are investigating former President Nicolas Sarkozy on claims that his presidential campaign was financed by ex-Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi.

The police are said to be investigating irregularities in Sarkozy’s campaign from his 2007 presidential elections; however, the former President has denied any wrongdoing.

“The claims about funding from Gaddafi came from a French-Lebanese businessman, Ziad Takieddine, and some former Gaddafi regime officials,” the BBC said.

Investigation with the ex-French president is taking place in the western Paris suburb of Nanterre, judicial sources told the BBC.

Sarkozy, who was President of France between 2007 and 2012, unsuccessfully ran for the post again in the 2012 elections.

French police had previously investigated the former President on these allegations, citing “illicit funds from Gaddafi”.

Police are also questioning Brice Hortefeux, who was one of ministers in Sarkozy’s government, in the case.
