Miguel Diaz-Canel elected as new president of Cuba

Mubasher: Miguel Diaz-Canel has been sworn in as the new president of Cuba, after former leader Raul Castro decided to retire.

Diaz-Canel served as the first vice-president for the past five years, which has is leading to speculations that he will not take drastic changes in the communist government.

The new president was elected with a unanimous vote by the 605 members of the National Assembly.

Raul Castro (86 years) served as president and the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba since taking over from his brother Fidel Castro back in 2006, and he is set to continue to lead the ruling party.
