North Korea shuts a nuclear test site

Mubasher: North Korea implemented on Thursday what it described as the demolition of its test nuclear site in the presence of foreign reporters.

A series of explosions were centered on three tunnels into the underground the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in mountains of the country’s northeast which is inhabited by small number of people, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Foreign media, mostly TV networks, were allowed to witness the event, indicating that North Korea wants the images of the event to be broadcast to the entire world, the news agency said, adding that their crew were present.

However, the North did not invite international inspectors to the closing, which limited its value as a serious measure.

The planned closing, previously announced by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, signalled a welcome gesture to set a positive tone, ahead of his scheduled summit with the US President Donald Trump on 12 June in Singapore, despite the move is not irreversible and further significant measures need to be taken to fulfill the denuclearisation demands.

The demolition of the nuclear test site came as Washington and Pyongyang have been recently trading harsh remarks while taking tougher positions.

Pyongyang delivered another angry statement at the US, slamming Vice President Mike Pence as “political dummy” for suggesting that the North would end up like Libya if it does not take concrete measures.

Meanwhile, President Trump suggested on Tuesday that the planned summit could be delayed or cancelled entirely, during his meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae at the White House.

Nevertheless, both sides still seem to look forward to hold the talks, while a successful progress in the North Korean issue would be a major accomplishment for Trump, AP concluded.
