Trump slams May’s Brexit plan ahead of UK visit

Mubasher: US President Donald Trump directly took aim at Prime Minister Theresa May’s strategy for her country’s exit from the European Union (EU), also known as the Brexit, saying it would “kill” off hope of a bilateral trade agreement between Washington and London.

In an interview to The Sun newspaper published hours ahead of a lunch with the UK Prime Minister, President Trump criticised the “very unfortunate” outcome of the premier’s Brexit talks.

“If they do a deal like that, we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the UK, so it will probably kill the deal,” Trump told the newspaper.

Trump said that he would have conducted the Brexit negotiations with the EU differently, adding that the prime minister failed to take his advice on the matter.

Moreover, the US president applauded the former UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who quit his position this week following the resignation of David Davis who was tasked with negotiating the Brexit with the EU, saying that he “would be a great prime minister.”
