Dubai – Mubasher: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will debut the first autonomous taxi in the region at GITEX 2018 to be held in Dubai on Sunday.

A host of smart initiatives and services, including the test run of the driverless taxi, will be launched at the exhibition, director general and chairman of RTA Mattar Al Tayer revealed in a statement.

The show will also feature the 3D-printed spare parts of Dubai Metro, the AI-based automated Chat Bot system, and robotic cleaners for Dubai Metro stations, Al Tayer added.

This comes within the framework of a plan to turn Dubai into the smartest city in the world, he said.

The plan will also contribute to the execution of the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Mobility Strategy that aims to turn 25% of the emirate's total journeys into self-driving transit means by 2030, according to the statement.

The autonomous taxi, designed in collaboration with Dubai Silicon Oasis and DG World, is set to be run on specific routes at the Dubai Silicon Oasis.

Al Tayer noted that the taxi will be equipped with cameras and sensors that enable a full view of traffic and roads to control the vehicle and avoid collision.
