Mubasher: Bahrain is looking to establish the world’s largest underwater theme park and submerged Boeing 747 will be its centrepiece.

Spread over an area of 100,000 square meters, the underwater theme park is a fruit of a partnership between the GCC nation's Supreme Council for Environment, the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (DTEA) and the private sector, the state-run Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reported on Sunday.

The park will feature a submerged replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house, artificial coral reefs and other sculptures that have been placed underwater as a safe haven for coral growth and as a habitat for marine animals.

Designed as a dive experience, the eco-friendly project will attract diving enthusiasts from around the world, as well as help researchers obtain information and data on marine ecology and biology.

The project's construction work is expected to be commenced over the coming weeks to be opened to divers and visitors before the summer.

The GCC nation did not give further details regarding the project's total cost.
