Oil prices may soar on NOPEC bill – US Secretary

Mubasher: The US must be careful regarding a legislation that could allow president Donald Trump Administration to sue the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Washington energy secretary Rick Perry stated.

The anti-OPEC bill would destabilise the oil market, reducing oil producers’ supply management, which may boost prices, the secretary added.

“We need to be really careful before we pass legislation that may have an impact that goes way past its intended consequences,” Reuters reported, citing Perry as saying.

Trump has been criticising OPEC over their supply cuts intended at pushing up prices.

“Oil prices getting too high. OPEC, please relax and take it easy. World cannot take a price hike – fragile,” Trump tweeted earlier this week.

Named NOPEC, the US House of Representatives’ Judiciary Committee unanimously passed the new bill to, be subject to the vote of the full house.

If passed, the legislation would amend the US antitrust law to strip OPEC of any immunity from lawsuit, allowing the US attorney general to sue the oil producers’ organisation, any of its members, and countries it works with.
