Mubasher: The German government would decide by next September the ways to tackle the areas where the efforts aiming to cut emissions are lagging, and threatening adherence with Germany’s climate targets for 2030, Reuters reported.
The cabinet’s policy could bring sectors like transport, construction and agriculture into the fold of the European Union’s (EU) emissions trading system (ETS), German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday.
“It will be a fundamental decision that will have to be arrived at very carefully and in a timely fashion,” Chancellor Merkel said.
Under the ETS, sectors would be subject to a unified price of emissions allowances that must be held.
These segments would be set emissions-cutting targets of their own, but with the risk of high costs.
