Trump vows ‘substantial’ China tariffs if no deal reached

Mubasher: US President Donald Trump threatened again to slap additional tariffs on Chinese goods if a trade agreement is not reached, Fox Business reported.

“When tariffs go on in China we are taking in billions and billions of dollars […] now you have another $325 billion that I haven’t taxed yet — it’s ripe for taxing — for putting tariffs on,” President Trump said in an interview with Fox Business.

Market participants are anticipating the outcome of a meeting between Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping scheduled for Saturday in Japan, where they will discuss trade between the world’s top two economies.

Trump said that he is satisfied as “companies are moving out of China, [while] some are coming back to the US because they don’t want to pay the tariff.”

Although a deal between Washington and Beijing is “possible,” the US president’s “plan B” may include a 10% levy on the remaining Chinese goods.

The US threatened to slap additional tariffs on another $300 billion worth of Chinese imports, after raising duties on $200 billion to 25%.

“Now I would do additional tariffs by very substantial additional tariffs if that doesn’t work if we don’t make a deal,” Trump said.

Trump’s remarks arrived the same day that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin struck an optimistic tone regarding the Trump-Xi meeting.
