GM workers union strike for first time since 2007

GM workers union strike for first time since 2007

Mubasher: The United Auto Workers (UAW) announced that tens of thousands of General Motors (GM) went out on a strike on after Sunday night.

After talks with GM hit a stalemate on Sunday, the UAW called for the first nationwide walkout since 12 years, with around 48,000 hourly workers at the automaker’s 31 factories and 21 other facilities participating in nine US states.

The UAW is demanding fairer wages, affordable health care, profits  and job security.

The union’s vice president Terry Dittes accused GM of refusing “to put hard working Americans ahead of their record profits of $35 billion in North America over the last three years.”

The car company said that its offer to the union during the talks included more than $7 billion in new investments, 5,400 jobs, wage increases, improved benefits and a contract-ratification bonus of $8,000.

Talks between the UAW and GM are set to resume on Monday, but workers will still resume the strike, Dittes said.

GM will to work to reach a deal to build “a strong future for our employees and our business,” the US biggest car company.

Commenting on the GM walkout, US President Donald Trump urged the company and the union to “get together and make a deal.”
