Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt has set a water conservation plan that would see areas in the North Coast and Red Sea rely on desalinated seawater instead of the Nile’s water, the Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said.

The North African nation is currently implementing a plan worth EGP 900 billion to decrease its reliance on the River Nile, El-Sisi affirmed.

Spending on the water conservation plan has reached about EGP 200 billion to date, with expectations to stand at EGP 300 billion in 2020, the president revealed.

The plan includes setting up water desalination plants and tertiary wastewater treatment plants.

It is noteworthy that Egypt welcomed the US support for negotiations held by Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan to reach a mutually-beneficial agreement on the operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
