Nvidia to build world's 29th largest supercomputer in UK

Mubasher: Nvidia, a US chipmaker, has announced its plan to build a EUR 40 million ($52 million) supercomputer in Cambridge, which will be the 29th most powerful computer in the world and the most powerful in Britain, according to CNBC.

This decision came following the company's announcement of its intention to acquire its British rival Arm for $40 billion, Nvidia Founder and Chief Executive, Jensen Huang, disclosed during the company’s GTC 2020 conference.

To be named 'Cambridge-1', the supercomputer will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) research in healthcare to tackle the current crises facing the world.

"The Cambridge-1 supercomputer will serve as a hub of innovation for the UK, and further the groundbreaking work being done by the nation’s researchers in critical healthcare and drug discovery," Huang said.

Researchers at GSK, AstraZeneca, Guy’s and St Thomas’ National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, King’s College London, and Oxford Nanopore will utilise the supercomputer to solve medical challenges, including coronavirus (COVID-19).

To be powered by 80 connected Nvidia systems, Cambridge-1 will have 400 petaflops of AI performance; hence, it will be ranked in the top three most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world.
