Amazon to purchase power from wind farm in the Netherlands

Mubasher: Amazon will purchase more than half of the energy produced by a new offshore wind farm, powered by Shell and Eneco in the Netherlands, CNBC reported.

Shell and Eneco have secured the right to construct the 759MW Holladske Kust Noord offshore wind farm, expected to be operational by 2023, in July.

Amazon announced that it would buy more than 380 MW of farm's power output to run its operations in Europe.

To be operated by the CrossWind Consortium, a joint venture between Shell and Eneco, the farm is located 18.5 kilometers off the Dutch coast and covers an area of 125 square kilometers.

The offshore wind farm will comprise 69 wind turbines from Siemens Gamesa that have a capacity of 11MW and a rotor diameter of 200 metres.

In addition, the project will include five technology demonstrations that have the potential to be implemented at full scale in the future.

This step is in line with Amazon's commitment to be net-zero carbon across its businesses by 2040.
