UAE - Mubasher: India-based Reliance Industries Limited (Reliance) has signed an agreement to join a new chlor-alkali, ethylene dichloride, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production facility at TA’ZIZ, a chemical production hub and industrial ecosystem based in Ruwais in Abu Dhabi.

The facility will be constructed in the TA’ZIZ Industrial Chemicals Zone, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and ADQ, and is the first investment by Reliance in the region, according to a recent press release.

Under the agreement, TA’ZIZ and Reliance will build the integrated plant, which will have the capacity to produce 940,000 tonnes of chlor-alkali, 1.1 million tonnes of ethylene dichloride, and 360,000 tonnes of PVC per year.

Chlor-alkali is used in water treatment and the manufacture of textiles and metals, while Ethylene dichloride is used to produce PVC, with various applications across housing, infrastructure, and consumer goods.

The production of these chemicals will create new opportunities for In-County Value by enabling the local industry to source critical raw materials in the UAE for the first time.

Tenders for the initial design of the seven TA’ZIZ chemicals derivatives projects have been awarded, and the final investment decisions for the projects and awards of related EPC contracts are set for 2022.

The UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, said: "In line with our 2030 strategy, we look forward to creating further opportunities across the entire TA’ZIZ ecosystem for the next generation of local industry."

Meanwhile, Reliance Industries' Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh D. Ambani, commented: "The project will manufacture ethylene dichloride, a key building block for production of PVC in India.
