UAE – Mubasher: Etihad Airways has signed a joint-venture (JV) agreement with China Eastern Airlines, marking the first such partnership between a Middle Eastern and Chinese carrier.

The JV aims to jointly develop and expand routes connecting the UAE and China, strengthening both airlines' combined networks, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

It signifies a commitment to offering passengers more travel options and seamless experiences travelling between major Chinese cities like Shanghai and Beijing and destinations in the UAE, Middle East, and Africa served by Etihad.

Subject to regulatory approvals, the airlines plan to implement the JV cooperation in early 2025.

They will also introduce full reciprocal benefits for frequent flyer members in the final quarter (Q1) of 2024, allowing points earning and redemption when flying either airline.

Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of Etihad Aviation Group, said: “We look forward to welcoming a greater number of Chinese tourists to explore the rich cultural heritage and vibrant experiences that the UAE has to offer.”

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, stated: “The JV will allow Etihad and China Eastern to offer travellers enhanced travel options and exceptional value. We are confident the JV will unlock a new era of travel opportunities, while also boosting the economic growth of Abu Dhabi and the UAE.”

Wang Zhiqing, Chairman of China Eastern Airlines, commented: “The signing of this JV signifies a new level of collaboration, and China Eastern is eager to work with Etihad Airways to expand the cooperation in the various business areas, and thereby enhance the strategic partnership between both airlines."

In April 2024, Etihad Airways added the Saudi province of Al Qassim to its destinations list, bringing its total number of Saudi gateways to four.
