Mubasher: Tehran claimed that a US military drone has been shot down, using a surface-to-air missile, the Independent said, citing US and Iranian officials.
Different accounts of the incident were rendered by the two sides. While the US military stated that the drone was in international airspace, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said it entered Iranian territory close to the southern district of Kouhmobarak.
The drowning of the drone conveyed a “clear message” to the US, Guards’ commander General Hossein Salami was quoted by the online newspaper.
Iran does “not have any intention for war with any country, but we are ready for war,” Salami said.
The “spy” drone was identified by two Iranian state media agencies as RQ-4 Global Hawk, which was hit on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, the US military said that a Navy MQ-4C Triton drone was shot down by an Iranian missile over international waters.
US President Donald Trump condemned Iran’s shootdown, describing the move as “a very big mistake.”
The situation in the Middle East remained tense as Washington and Tehran since President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear accord, under which Iran received sanctions relief in exchange for the country’s limiting its uranium enrichment activity.
Recently, tensions escalated as two oil carriers were attacked in the Gulf of Oman last week.
The US and its allies accused Iran of the incident, prompting the former to deploy an aircraft carrier and additional troops in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Tehran distanced itself from the attack, saying that Iran was responsible for securing the Strait of Hormuz, and asking US troops to be withdrawn.
Iran announced also that it would boost enrichment of uranium, exceeding the limits under the nuclear deal.
