Cairo – Mubasher: Egypt’s transportation ministry considers using electric locomotives in the coming period in the railways currently being established, according to a statement on Wednesday.

The country’s fleet of locomotives needs to be developed as most locomotives came into service in 1976, transport minister Kamel El-Wazir said.

Egypt also plans to purchase a number of locomotives from Canada’s Bombardier, the country’s prime minister Moustafa Madbouly said.

In addition, Bombardier will work on upgrading locomotives of the Egyptian National Railways (ENR).

Earlier in June, El-Wazir discussed with a delegation from the Canada-based manufacturer of both planes and trains the procurement of 100 locomotives and rehabilitation of 50 Henschel locomotives and 40 Adtranz locomotives.
